This is an official Externship® endorsed by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT)
About the Training:
A 4-day Externship includes presentations of theory, clinical techniques and skills, training exercises, video recordings, observation of live sessions, and discussion of specific cases and clinical issues. Along with didactic presentation, this training will incorporate participant role plays in small group settings to practice this experiential model. The externship is a pre-requisite for Master classes and advanced Core Skills training in EFT.
Learning objectives:
-
Participants will obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an “Emotionally Focused” approach to therapy.
-
Participants will be able to view clients in the web of their interpersonal attachments and conceptualize relationship distress and repair based on theories of attachment and emotion.
-
Participants will develop skills in sharing and maintaining an engaged, open, and collaborative alliance with clients.
-
Participants will develop skills in the 5 moves of the basic macro-intervention – the EFT Tango – in order to change patterns of affect regulation, models of self and other, and interactional patterns.
-
Participants will develop skills in EFT micro interventions taken from experiential and systemic models of intervention.
-
Participants will develop skills in overcoming common blocks and impasses and shaping core corrective emotional experiences that lead to more secure relationships.
Special Focus: Deliberate Practice
Deliberate practice is the best technique for achieving expert performance in every field, including writing, teaching, sports, programming, music, medicine, psychotherapy, chess, and even business. Deliberate practice is what turns amateurs into professionals. Across every field deliberate practice is what creates top performers, and what they use to stay at the top of their game. As a general concept, “practice“ means preparing. It’s the act of repeatedly performing certain activities with the intention of improving a specific associated skill. We rehearse what to do in low pressure situations so we will be better when we use a skill in situations when something is actually at stake, such as in a psychotherapy office with a couple. Deliberate practice means practicing with a clear awareness of the specific components of a skill we are aiming to improve and exactly how to improve them. Unlike regular practice deliberate practice is a laser focused activity.
At the EFT Externship, Deliberate Practice exercises, provide trainees and students an opportunity to build competence in essential emotionally focused couple therapy skills while developing their own personal therapeutic style. During the training, students will engage in role-playing scenarios in which two trainees act as a client and a clinician switching back-and-forth under the guidance of a supervisor. The clinician improvises appropriate and authentic responses to client statements following specific criteria established for each skill.
